Alfie hasn’t moved in with the rest of flock yet. Since we brought him home he’s had a couple bouts with illness. And right when we were introducing him to the other budgies. The poor little guy was vomiting (not the typical regurgitation budgies will do) and listless. I took him to the vet and he gave Alfie a shot to help with the nausea. He also ran some labs. Alfie quickly recuperated and was his usual cheery self the next day.

Everything seemed fine, but we kept him apart from the other budgies in case he had something contagious. Unfortunately, the vet lost Alfie’s labs, so we had no idea what the problem was. Although Alfie seemed completely fine, we decided to keep him quarantined a little longer. This also gave us some more time to work on bonding with him.
A month later, Alfie was sick again (more vomiting, listless, no poops). So back to the vet we went for another shot and more labs. Once again, Alfie was fine the next day. The labs came back normal – the vet thinks that Alfie just has occasional tummy trouble.
As of today, he’s doing great. He’s been more adventurous. He comes out of his cage to investigate and his flying (and landings) are much improved.
Like the other budgies, Alfie likes to hang out on the paper towel roll.
I’m not sure who enjoys lettuce more. Ozzie or Alfie…

Miss Kauai had some tummy troubles in the past. I thought she was going to die. When I asked her vet about it he said that he thought she may have had some bad food–like food poisoning. After a day, she was better. Is that what happened to Alfie, or was he sick a couple of days?
It’s so scary when they’re ill like that. And it’s scarier to go online to try to figure out what’s going on. They can go downhill so quickly.
I’m glad Miss Kauai is okay. I don’t think it was food poisoning, as the other budgies eat the same seed/pellets/fruit and veggies. I was worried that it may be yeast, so I cut out the fruit in Alfie’s diet. He was sick only one day each time (who knows if it would have been longer without the injections). Maybe he ate too much that day, or ate some paper? Who knows? Alfie really is a mystery bird.
What’s worse is it happens when the vet is not available. Miss Kauai got sick on Sunday both times!
Oh no – the poor little pookie! That’s awful! I’m thankful Alfie wasn’t sick on the weekend.

He looks a lot like one of my flock. My fellow tends to be very spirited. I hope Alfie continues to show good resistance! He must be very strong. He is really a very sweet boy, and I enjoyed the photos of him you shared.
