Yesterday we went to Free Flight’s Brunch with the Birds. It was a beautiful day. It was good to visit with the birds and the people who work and volunteer at the sanctuary.
Midori is always picture perfect.
Baby Bird wants OUT. She did come out for some head scritches, she has a head full of pinnies.
I don’t know this little one’s name, but I’m impressed.
And this little one can spin (in both directions), loop the loop and shake hands… er, feet (which is even better)!
Cooper decided that once a month she wants to feature those who rescue, shelter or are active in the conservation of her feathered friends. This month she would like to promote Best Friends Animal Society.
Best Friends (with locations in California, New York, Atlanta and Utah) operates pet adoption centers, spay/neuter clinics and no-kill initiatives as well as a No More Homeless Pets Network of animal rescue groups in every corner of the nation.
There are all sorts of animals available for adoption, including cats, dogs, horses, turtles, rabbits, pigs and, of course, birds. There are currently 83 birds available for adoption at the Kanab, Utah Sanctuary (including the cockatiels pictured above).
If you would like to help. you can donate, sponsor an animal or even help through shopping on Amazon Smile. The site also has stories of animals like Mitch the cockatiel, who found his forever home (along with 3 other cockatiels and 7 budgies).
…but almost as cute.
Here is Princess, a Japanese White-Eye getting a little massage.
You can see more of Princess on her Instagram page.
Cooper decided that once a month she wants to feature those who rescue, shelter or are active in the conservation of her feathered friends. This month she would like to promote Phoenix Landing.
Phoenix Landing is an all volunteer organization dedicated to the welfare of parrots – from budgies to macaws. They facilitate adoption, have a foster program, help veterinarian students interested in avian medicine, sponsor research and conservation for wild parrots, advocate standards of care for birds and provide educational opportunities for the public.
Phoenix Landing has helped 2,663 parrots as of February 1st. A newsletter is available on their site if you would like to know more. You can donate on their site. They also have a store with toys, perches, clothing, books and food for birds. Shopping here helps to support their education and adoption programs.
Thanks to Eve for letting us know about this wonderful organization.
Cooper decided that once a month she wants to feature those who rescue, shelter or are active in the conservation of her feathered friends. This month she would like to promote Burge Bird Rescue.
This Kansas City, Missouri non profit was started by veterinarian Dr. Julie Burge in 1990. She, her staff and volunteers provide medical help and shelter for birds. Birds available for adoption include parrots, doves, cockatiels and budgies. You must pass a screening interview to adopt. Birds that will remain at the shelter (due to special needs or medical issues, for example) reside in the Sanctuary Room.
The website has bios and photos of the birds and information about bird care. There are rescue stories, too. Some birds are available for sponsorship.
If you are thinking about sponsoring a bird, donating to a worthy cause or would like to add a bird to your family (and are in the Missouri area), please contact Burge Bird Rescue here.
In case you need a little…
This little birdie (was a triple dog dare involved?) froze its feet to a fence. Luckily, hero Nelson Wilson was able to rescue him.
Cooper is on her soapbox to spread awareness about National Bird Day. She hopes that bird lovers everywhere will celebrate their feathered friends by helping and/or learning about bird welfare and conservation. Cooper’s wish is that one day no bird species will be endangered or caged, and that all birds will fly free. Or waddle free (penguins). Or run free (ostriches). Well, you get the idea.
You can learn more about National Bird Day and ways you can be involved here.
