Play gym!

I bought a play gym the other day for the budgies. I needed something that would fit on the top of the bookshelf and (hopefully) prevent the budgies from chewing it up.

It’s the Bird Activity Center from Penn-Plax. You put it together! Cooper helped me out. You’re supposed to glue the posts in, but we skipped that part. I wouldn’t want the budgies to chew down to the glue and ingest any.

Once our brave budgie Cooper gave it a thorough inspection (and it didn’t eat her), the rest of the flock decided to join her on the gym.

The first thing Sunny did was chew on the edge.

The budgies enjoy flying back and forth between the gym and their cage. I replaced the green globbie thing with more stuff for the budgies to chew. They weren’t using the swing, so I used the hooks to hang up some toys. And (for now) the budgies aren’t chewing on my bookcase…

but they are going to town on the sides of the gym. Sigh.

Blue beak

Uh, remember that toy from 3 posts ago? The one I thought would last for more than a week? Well, this one* was on a mission to prove me wrong.

*with a little help from Cooper and Ozzie.

She nibbled so much on the blue block that her beak turned blue.

I couldn’t get a photo of it, but her tongue was blue, too.

She went through 4 of the yucca pieces in 2 days.

New Toy – June

It’s the Side Winder from Jungle Toys. It’s got these big pieces of yucca and wooden blocks. The budgies go through chew toys quickly, but I’m thinking this one will last for more than a week.

Sunny and Cooper love it!

I hope all the chewing takes Cooper’s mind off of her moulting/pin feathers.

Even Ozzie is getting in on the action. Not Dewey, though. He prefers to nibble on Sunny.

Argh.

The budgies are driving me nuts. They started gnawing on my bookcase, so I covered it with a towel to keep it from becoming a chew toy (Harry is going to rig something up later to prevent this from happening).

But now they just climb down the towel and hang off the end to chew on the bookcase. Or even worse, the wall paint – which is a big no no!

And I don’t know what it is about the window blinds, but I cannot keep the budgies off of them (Dewey is Sunny’s shadow).

Sunny likes to climb under the towel or blinds so I can’t find her. Here she is in action:

Budgie Kabob

After reading about Susan’s kabob for her little Ellie, I had to go to the pet store and get one for the flock.

I loaded it up with Granny Smith apple, banana and carrot. I added some lettuce to entice the budgies.

But the budgies kept their distance.

Except for Ozzie, who is crazy about lettuce.

Sunny’s toys

For her birthday, Sunny received the “Mini Starburst” toy from Superbird Creations. The other budgies helped her play with it (especially Ozzie).

She also got her favorite toy – marshmallows (kabobs) and feasted on millet. Sunny wants everyone to know she’s moulting and doesn’t usually look this scraggly.

Sunny turns two-ish (according to the info. from her previous owner). Sunny is still camera shy, so I couldn’t get a real pic of her with her unopened presents.

New Toy – April

This is a toy I put together. I bought the vine balls (a budgie favorite) at the bird store – the rest is recycled parts from previous toys. The toy was a big hit. There was even some squabbling over who got to play with it first.
