Lights out!

Every spring and fall, billions of birds migrate through the US, 80% at night. This mass movement of birds must contend with light pollution. Light attracts and disorients migrating birds, confusing and exhausting them as well as making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings

You can help by turning off or dimming non-essential lighting during critical migration periods (peak hours are between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.). Turning off lights dramatically reduces hazards from attraction to and disorientation by light, allowing birds to safely proceed with their migratory journeys. Fall migration lasts from August to November, with September and October being the busiest months in North America.

Cooper says, “Lights out to help our feathered friends.”
