Jackie Cooper  (September 15, 1922 – May 3, 2011)

Jackie Cooper was an American actor, television director, producer and executive.

Cooper was the first child actor to receive an Academy Award nomination (for the film Skippy). He played “Jackie” in the Our Gang short films. Other movies he starred in as a child included Treasure Island and The Champ. He starred in many projects as an adult – one of the most well known was as editor Perry White in the Superman films.

He also worked behind the camera – and won two Emmys for directing.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and remained active in the reserves for the next several decades, reaching the rank of Captain.

Cooper participated in several automobile racing events, including the record-breaking class D cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

We were watching House Hunters the other night, when all of a sudden – BUDGIES!

The house hunting couple was visiting the budgie aviary at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They have over 300 budgies. You can even hand feed them!

Zoo Atlanta and the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston also have awesome budgie aviaries.

Too bad the World Famous San Diego Zoo doesn’t have a budgie aviary.

Maybe this town’s only big enough for two budgies…

Cooper’s book report

Maxie by Betty Basler Barboza

This short, but sweet little book (recommended by Susan) is about a budgie named Maxie and his life with the Basler family. Maxie was a charming and talkative little fellow, who had a series of amusing adventures. Cooper’s favorite parts of the book where when Maxie saved baby Brad’s life (from poisoning!) and when Maxie dropped his toys to the floor (a game Cooper likes to play). The family loved Maxie so much they had him stuffed after he died (that’s stuffed Maxie on the cover – yikes).
