Sunny’s toys
For her birthday, Sunny received the “Mini Starburst” toy from Superbird Creations. The other budgies helped her play with it (especially Ozzie).
She also got her favorite toy – marshmallows (kabobs) and feasted on millet. Sunny wants everyone to know she’s moulting and doesn’t usually look this scraggly.

Budgies in Art
These wonderful paintings are by Cooper’s favorite artist, Fletcher Prentice.

Birdie Bread
The last time I went to our local bird store, I saw some bird bread mix and thought I’d give it a try.
The ingredients are: polenta*, whole wheat flour*, yellow corn*, carrots*, sweet potato, blueberries, cherries, coconut, flax seed, buckwheat groats*, quinoa* and Mmmmmmillet*.
*organic
The recipe called for two eggs, one cup of water and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Cooper supervised. Or should I say, “Coopervised”?
We used a glass loaf pan. No non-stick pans allowed – teflon fumes are toxic for budgies!
Cooper wasn’t too sure about this glop – but into the oven it went for 30 minutes.
At first they budgies didn’t know what to make of it. I threw some lettuce in to help tempt them. Sunny was more interested in chewing up the paper plate. Cooper (the finickiest of the flock) was the first to give the bread a try.
It wasn’t too long before they all gave it a nibble.

The bread was a success! A good thing, since there’s a lot of it. It stores nicely in the fridge, so the budgies will be having yummy leftovers this week.
A Trip to the Vet
Yesterday Cooper, Dewey and Ozzie went to the Vet! Dewey went to have his leg band closed up (it was open and catching on toys) and his Fu Manchu nails trimmed. Because Ozzie was a rescue bird from the animal shelter, he was eligible for a free exam. Cooper just went along for the ride.
Here they are in their travel cage in the waiting room.
Cooper decided to take a bath in the water dish. What a nut.
In the examination room. The little basket Ozzie is in is the scale. The budgies looked so tiny when the doctor examined them. He even listened to their hearts with a stethoscope – it was too cute.
Here is Dewey looking very dapper with his closed band and trimmed nails. The budgies were very brave and did a great job – so they were all rewarded with millet when they got home (Sunny, too!).
Dr. Seuss Day
Three’s Company(?)
So we let Cooper, Dewey and Ozzie out of their cages.
But then Dewey and Ozzie settled down. Now they’re little buddies and like to be together. Dewey even chases Cooper off when she gets too close to them. I’m not sure if Dewey wants Ozzie all to himself or if he doesn’t want Cooper and Ozzie to become little sweethearts.
They’re still establishing a pecking order, and can’t be alone without supervision. But it looks promising…
