New Toy – January

helixIt’s the Helix bird toy from All Bonka Bird Toys. I took the foam parts off (the budgies are such chewers, don’t want them chewing foam) and added a couple vine rings.

cCooper started things off. Then it was Sunny’s turn. She loved it.sEmmy comes closer to see what’s going on.e1And closer…e3This is a popular toy – there was certainly a lot of squabbling over it. But things calmed down eventually (thank goodness).

Harvey meets the flock

We moved Harvey’s cage into the birdroom (might as well just start calling my office this) on Saturday. He’s not stepping up yet, but is close. As soon as he does, he’ll move into the big cage.

Cooper met Harvey first (she’s the calmest of the budgies). We let her visit him when he was in the living room. It wasn’t a love match, but she did let him feed her.c1Meeting Sunny. It makes such a lovely racket when you repeatedly pick it up and drop it.emLooks like Harvey is ready to come out!
harCan’t wait until they’re all together : ).

All the other budgies come and go to give it a nibble, but this is HER toy – so watch out!

Cooper’s Bloopers

We don’t always get the budgies’ photos right on the first shot*. Here are some pics that didn’t make the cut.34I think Cooper thinks there might be millet back there…1Lera streeetches.eA yawn from the birthday girl (Emmy).567How can you have a cornucopia without millet?8* Due to the photographer and through no fault of the models, of course.

365 days of Emmy

One year ago today we brought home this adorable budgie. nb2We found her on Craigslist. She was a bundle of energy. Lots of climbing of the cage walls, rolling around on the bottom of the cage, twisting and turning upside down – a little acrobat. Unfortunately, she was also terrified of us and would flip out whenever we got near her. It took months to get her used to my hand being in the cage. And even longer to get her to step up. Today she will step up, but will hop off if we move our hands. We’ve only managed to get her out of the cage on our fingers on a few occasions. She’s still a work in progress…e1Emmy is our biggest budgie (I think she has some English budgie in her). She’s so soft and fluffy. I love her whipped cream tummy and the fact that she has one white cheek. She’s also a funny little nut. Except at bedtime, when she chases the other budgies. We’re not sure if she’s afraid of the dark, or just wants to be rightnext to the other budgies. e2Here she is with her boyfriend Ozzie (Emmers and Ozzers) – who puts up with her shenanigans.

Happy Anniversary Emmy – we love you!

All Together Now

Emmy and Felix finally moved into the big cage. Felix pals around with Gordie, but is a little standoffish with the others. I think Emmy wanted to be alpha female, but Lera shut that down pretty quickly. Both are doing well and seem to enjoy being with the flock. And I enjoy having only one cage to clean : ).
