Quarantine is Up! Part Three

Gordie moved into the big cage today.1He seems to be doing pretty well. He’s been keeping to himself, but has been chirping and investigated one of the toys. He sticks to one spot and avoids the other budgies, but I’m hoping they’ll all warm up to each other quickly.2Emmy came out of the cage and bonked into a wall. Eesh. She seems to be doing better flying around, though. It helps to have Ozzie show her how to navigate the room.3Emmy moved to the quarantine cage. Just until I finger tame her. It’s impossible to do in the big cage. Ozzie will visit and sleep there (and show her that stepping up is easy). As soon as Emmy moves back into the big cage, it will be Lera’s turn to meet the budgies. Jeez, we have a lot of budgies!

Quarantine is up! Part Two

Gordie came out of his cage today to meet the budgies face to face.oHere he is with Ozzie (that’s Emmy down below). Ozzie was a little aggressive, so we put him back in the cage.aAt first, Gordie just sat in one spot. Here he is with Alfie.allIt wasn’t too long before he joined the others. Here he is meeting the girls. He seemed perkier being with the budgies – following them around and chirping.pinAll the excitement must have tuckered him out. When we put him back in his cage, he went right to sleep. Of course, growing out all those pinnies takes a lot of energy as well!

The Newbies

A little update on how the new budgies are doing.eEmmy loves the new cage. She is all over everything. She’s quite the energetic acrobat. She’s definitely going to keep Ozzie on his toes. Today she came out of the cage and flew around the room. She bonked into a couple walls. Ack! She’s fine, though. Watching a budgie learn to fly for the first time in a room is awful. Emmy still isn’t finger tame. I need to work on that!
gPoor Gordie! Look at those pinnies! He’s going through a rather bad moult. Gordie will be out of quarantine soon. I’m glad he’ll be with the other budgies. He just sits in his cage and doesn’t play with his toys. He’s so quiet. I’m hoping he’ll be happy when he’s part of a flock. Gordie is great at sitting on our shoulders, but does not like fingers. But we keep trying – I think he’ll get there eventually.lLittle Lera (named after my niece Solera). She’s such a sweetie. Her quarantine will be up soon as well. She lets me pet her tummy, so I think stepping up is right around the corner. Three days after we brought Gordie home I saw an ad for a budgie in Craigslist. She was in our neighborhood, so I couldn’t resist. She’s just started playing with her toys. It seems that it takes the rehomed budgies a month to be comfortable (exploring their cage and playing with their toys).

It will be so nice to have all the budgies in one cage. Probably quieter, too!

Movin’ On Up

A while ago something arrived in the mail.

cagebox(insert “What’s in the box?” joke here)instructionsIt was a brand new cage for the budgies! Harry put it together.cooperviseCooper “coopervised”.finishHere’s Cooper deciding if Harry’s work is acceptable.allOnce she deemed the cage suitable, the budgies moved in.aAlfie is never far from a bell.cCooper was not too excited about having her picture taken – she is moulting and doesn’t feel she looks her best. sSunny was too busy taking apart the marshmallow toy to pose.eEmmy sitting pretty. The cage has a divider, which is up at present. Until Emmy is finger tamed we have her separated from the others. Ozzie spends his time going back and forth between sides.0Which is easy to do when you have your own airplane!

Emmy meets the flock

Even though Emmy isn’t finger tame (or even close to being so), we put her cage in the same room with the rest of the flock. We thought maybe Emmy’s presence would be a bit of a distraction for the budgies.

ceCooper didn’t seem too curious about the new girl.

aAlfie showed some initial interest, so I put him in the cage with her. But he just wanted to play with her toy.

fI took all the budgies out to visit.

sleepThey promptly fell asleep.

Poor Emmy – she so wants to be with them, and goes nuts climbing all over the cage to get to them. But the budgies just don’t seem to be interested. Maybe it’s because she’s so young.

oThank goodness for Ozzie. He’s our little welcome wagon. He’ll fly over and visit occasionally with her. What a little sweetie.

Emmy!

e1The good news – Emmy’s quarantine is almost up!

n1 (1)The bad news – Emmy is not ready to join the rest of the flock quite yet.

n1 (2)This little darling is one skittish budgie. I don’t know what her previous owners were doing with her (grabbing her? banging on her cage?), but she is very easily spooked and flaps around the cage if we get too near. It’s going to take some time to tame her, but I’m confident we’ll win her over. Patience pays off!

*Thanks to everyone for the name suggestions!
